This charter we had was extra special because we had a family friend and returning client, Adrian Mckibbin, who was in town for the UH Volleyball vs. USC game. He is from Hawaii but lives in La Jolla, CA. His family is huge & just awesome athletes as I played volleyball with his younger brother Owen, who has been on more covers of Mens Health than anyone. Nails, ripped, specimen pretty much, like me, uh, 60 lbs ago! The day was early for us as we made our way out as Adrian has caught everything under the sun & is considered a lucky guy or in our case a lucky charm. Adrian has fished with my younger brother Ryan Foster, on DOJO, in Kona for years as they’ve done very well, catching countless ahi(yellowfin tuna), blue marlin, Ono, mahimahi, pelagics a plenty, out of Honokahau Harbor.

After catching bait, we proceeded to the nearest fad & saw nothing, so plan B went into effect and we progressed towards the 1000-1500 fathom curve outside the new Disney Aulani Resort and Spa Hotel.

We ended up outside 10 miles and started to see mahimahi schools, and then it all began. The first 5 were pretty routine, then as we were setting back up, the center rigger came slamming down, then stopped, then the long rigger came down and it felt as if we’d hooked a submarine. We usually know fish hits what in the first few seconds of the bite, but this behemoth never gave us a look. It took 3/4 spool of the Shimano 130 with 150lbs test in a minute or so and we knew it was a real one. Then, to make us wonder even more, the line went straight down, bending the big rod like I haven’t seen in awhile. What? Big Blue marlin? Big ahi? Giant Big Eye Tuna? It all went through my mind believe me. After we realized we were about to get spooled we started to back down on the beast and started gaining line.

Someone, or all of us basically decided it would be better if Adrian got in the chair to fight this thing, so I put the boat I. Gear to keep the line tight & Mo (deckhand, engineer, badass), took over the rod for Adrian, & at that very instant, it was gone,lost, unhooked, unbuttoned, adios, aloha, hemolele or whatever you wanna call it. But we will never know what kind of fish it was, how big the fish was, and it’ll go down like most fishing stories end, the big one that got away! Sounds so cliche’, So F—— cliche’! But you know, that’s why we do it! People could catch the fish of a lifetime every time they go out. Grander? Toner? We know they’re out there, just gotta go, and keep going!

Almost forgot, Adrian fought more mahimahi till dusk. He almost made the UH vs USC volleyball game his nephews were starring in (which UH won) but the 6 mahimahi we cut for the BBQ would take care of that. We spoke about how UH never gives up and comes from behind to close the deal, the next thing you know, they’ve smoked you! Kinda like that marlin!
